Restorative Justice
Restorative Justice and Victims As the victim of a crime, Circles give you choices. You have the option to participate in the decision-making around how to handle the court case along with an advocate, the prosecutor, the judge and the community volunteers. Throughout the circle process, you have the option of making your wishes known regarding sanctions and restorative measures for the offender. This can be done by personally attending a circle, through phone conversations with a circle keeper or advocate, by mail or through a third party such as an advocate or relative. If you choose to participate in the circle process, you will have the opportunity to tell your story about how the crime has impacted you and/or your family, how your life has changed, and how the offender or crime has impacted your life in general. You may choose to attend a circle held especially for you or you may choose to attend a circle with an offender. You can also choose to bring support persons with you at any stage of the process as well. The aspiration of the circle is to provide you the support you need in healing from what has happened within your life. It is a forum for you to have a voice into what has happened in your life, what your wishes are for the offender and their future and to begin the healing process in your life. The circle process is available for you in whatever way you choose to participate.
